Nainital, often called the Lake District of India, sits at a breathtaking altitude of 2,084 metres in the Kumaon Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The town wraps around the jewel-green Naini Lake, a natural glacial body of water whose shores are lined with colourful boats, Victorian-era hotels, and the bustling Mall Road. The name Nainital derives from the Naini Lake — “Naina” meaning eye and “Tal” meaning lake.
The British discovered Nainital in 1841 when P. Barron, a sugar trader, became the first Englishman to reach the lake. Captivated by its beauty, the British rapidly developed it as a hill station and it soon became the summer capital of the United Provinces. This colonial legacy is visible everywhere — in the grand Victorian buildings along Mall Road, the Gothic architecture of St. John in the Wilderness church, the Raj Bhawan (Governor's Residence), and the dozens of heritage hotels that dot the hillsides.
Beyond its historical charm, Nainital is a nature lover's paradise. The surrounding hills are draped in forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine, home to leopards, Himalayan black bears, and hundreds of bird species. The nearby Naina Devi Wildlife Sanctuary offers incredible birding and trekking opportunities. On clear days, the snow-capped Himalayan peaks — including Nanda Devi and Trisul — are visible from the higher vantage points around the town.
The town is divided into two areas: Mallital (head of the lake) and Tallital (foot of the lake), connected by the famous Mall Road. The Flats — a large open ground in Mallital — hosts cultural events, the iconic Nainital Boat Club, and the popular Tibetan Market. The Snow View Point, accessible by cable car, offers panoramic views of the Himalayan range. Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat), Lands End, and the Nainital Zoo are other must-visit spots.
Nainital is also a hub for adventure activities. The lake offers boating and yachting, while the surrounding hills are perfect for trekking, rock climbing, and horse riding. The Kainchi Dham temple, a major pilgrimage site associated with Neem Karoli Baba, is just 17 km away and attracts thousands of devotees, including many international visitors inspired by stories of Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg's visits to the ashram.
