Mukteshwar is a small town perched at 2,286 metres in the Kumaon Himalayas, about 51 km from Nainital. Its name derives from the ancient Mukteshwar Dham temple dedicated to Lord Shiva — “Mukti” meaning salvation and “Ishwar” meaning God. The town's greatest asset is its location: on clear days, visitors can see an unbroken panorama of over 300 km of the Himalayan range, including peaks like Nanda Devi (7,816m), Trisul (7,120m), Nanda Kot, and Panchachuli.
The British established Mukteshwar as a research centre in 1893, founding the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) here to take advantage of the cool, pristine climate. The IVRI's sprawling campus occupies much of the ridge and adds to the town's old-world, unhurried character. Today, Mukteshwar is famous for its apple, peach, and plum orchards that bloom spectacularly in spring (March–April), transforming the hillsides into carpets of pink and white blossoms.
The Mukteshwar Dham temple sits at the highest point in the town (2,315m) and is particularly dramatic — the ancient stone shrine is backed by the towering Himalayan peaks, and the rock face behind it, known as Chauli ki Jali, is famous for rock climbing, rappelling, and zip-lining. According to local legend, the Goddess Nanda Devi created this rocky lattice while battling a demon. The cliff face offers thrilling views of the sheer drop into the valley below.
Mukteshwar has been steadily growing as a favourite among artists, writers, and discerning travellers who come for its unhurried pace, extraordinary light (beloved by painters and photographers), and the sense of being truly at the top of the world. The local apple orchards, owned by generations of Kumaoni farming families, welcome visitors during harvest season (September–October), offering the chance to pick fresh apples straight from the branch and taste freshly pressed apple juice.
The deodar and rhododendron forests around Mukteshwar are excellent for trekking, with trails ranging from gentle 2-hour walks to multi-day hikes toward the higher ridges. The drive from Nainital to Mukteshwar (approximately 2 hours) is one of the most scenic in Uttarakhand, winding through villages, terraced fields, and oak forests, with constant Himalayan views on clear days.
