McLeodganj, a hill suburb of Dharamshala at 1,457 metres in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, has been the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile since 1960, when His Holiness the Dalai Lama established his headquarters here following the Chinese occupation of Tibet. This unique political and cultural history has given McLeodganj its extraordinary character — a place where Tibetan Buddhist culture thrives in vivid contrast to the surrounding Kangra Valley landscape.
The Tsuglagkhang Complex (Central Cathedral) is the heart of McLeodganj's Tibetan Buddhist life. It houses a 14-foot golden statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, the Dalai Lama's residence and temple (Namgyal Monastery), and the Tibet Museum — a profoundly moving documentation of Tibetan culture, history, and the stories of those who fled Tibet. The Dalai Lama teaches here periodically, and these teachings draw thousands of devotees and meditation students from across the world.
The Bhagsu Nag area (2 km from McLeodganj) has a famous waterfall, an ancient Shiva temple, and a cluster of cafes and yoga centres that have made it a favourite haunt of backpackers and spiritual seekers. The Triund Trek (9 km, 5–6 hours) is one of the most popular day treks in Himachal Pradesh — ascending through magnificent deodar forests to a magical alpine meadow at 2,875m with direct views of the Dhauladhar range's snow walls.
McLeodganj's café culture is unlike anywhere else in India — Tibetan momos, butter tea, thukpa noodle soup, and tsampa coexist with Israeli falafel, Italian pasta, and organic chai in a global village atmosphere. The main bazaar is full of Tibetan handicrafts, thangka paintings, singing bowls, prayer flags, and incense — an authentic and affordable shopping experience for Buddhist art and culture.
