Lansdowne is a small cantonment hill station in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, perched at 1,706 metres. Established in 1887 by Lord Lansdowne, the then Viceroy of India, as the home of the Garhwal Rifles regiment, Lansdowne is one of the smallest and best-preserved hill stations in Uttarakhand — its military management having shielded it from the uncontrolled development that has affected many other Himalayan towns.
Lansdowne's principal charm is its unhurried, genuinely peaceful character. There are no cable cars, no noisy amusement parks, and no bustling bazaars. Instead, the town offers oak and pine forests that you can walk into directly from your hotel, modest colonial buildings in impeccable condition, a well-kept cantonment with immaculate parade grounds, and clean mountain air that makes simply sitting on a hillside a restorative experience.
The Garhwal Rifles War Memorial is the town's centrepiece — a solemn, beautifully maintained monument to the soldiers of the Garhwal Rifles who have served in every major conflict from World War I to the present day. The adjacent Garhwal Rifles Regimental Museum houses an impressive collection of arms, medals, uniforms, and battle dioramas. The Bhulla Lake (2 km from town) is a peaceful artificial lake perfect for boating and picnics. The Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple (38 km) is one of Garhwal's most sacred Shiva shrines, set in ancient cedar forests on a dramatic ridge.
The landscape around Lansdowne is superb for trekking. The Kotdwar-Lansdowne trail passes through sal and mixed forests rich with wildlife. The Kalagarh Tiger Reserve (50 km) — the eastern extension of Jim Corbett National Park — offers tiger safaris in a far less visited setting than Corbett's main zones.
